SAANICH, B.C. — August 23, 2026 — Kathleen Burton today announced her candidacy for Saanich Council and the Capital Regional District (CRD), bringing years of community leadership, nonprofit experience, public-service work and a strong commitment to Saanich families to the 2026 municipal election.

Burton has spent years working in and for the community, including leadership in the nonprofit sector and experience running a local Constituency Office. She has also been actively involved in local community issues and organizations, advocating for healthy neighbourhoods, environmental protection, responsible growth and stronger community connections.

“I’m running because I believe Saanich needs practical, thoughtful leadership that listens to residents and brings people together,” said Burton. “Our community is changing, and we have an opportunity to plan for that change while protecting the things that make Saanich such a special place to live.”

Burton says her priorities will include liveable neighbourhoods and housing affordability, responsible growth and environmental stewardship, healthy and connected communities, transportation and accessibility, fiscal responsibility, and a calming influence.

Burton recently completed a Master’s degree in Environment and Management program, and a graduate certificate in Professional Communications Management at Royal Roads, furthering her commitment to an evidence-based, systems thinking approach to environmental stewardship and sustainable community planning.

She believes Saanich can accommodate growth while respecting neighbourhood character, protecting natural areas and ensuring that infrastructure and services keep pace with development.

“Affordability is about more than housing,” Burton said. “It is about whether families can afford to live here, whether seniors can remain in their communities, whether people can get where they need to go, and whether we are making responsible decisions about the future of our municipality.”

Her candidacy for the CRD reflects her belief that many of the challenges facing Saanich cannot be addressed by the municipality alone. Regional cooperation is essential on issues including transportation, housing, environmental protection, emergency preparedness, water and wastewater, and long-term regional planning.

“Strong local government starts with listening,” Burton said. “I want residents to know that I will bring their voices to the table, ask difficult questions, look at the evidence and work collaboratively to find solutions.”

Burton is asking residents to join her in building a Saanich that is affordable, collaborative, connected, environmentally responsible and prepared for the future.

“I’m not running simply to hold a position. I’m running because I care deeply about this community and want to put my experience, energy and commitment to work for the residents of Saanich, and the community I call home.”
